I then brought up the issue of the 1998 Powerbook repair program with lasted for 6+ years. I told them HP and Dell had extended to 60 months (on their sites) and Apple own support article on the issue stated they would continue to evaluate the issue and extend the repair if needed. I also brought up the fact that they wouldn't replace until it failed but was failing for a while (blank screen on boot or wake but would eventually would work). The key seems to be that it boots and Apple was able to document failed chip. Took about 90 minutes to work thru the maze but I got what I wanted: my MBP 2007 repaired for free.

He reviewed my case plus may history of $$$ buying Apple products and made a waiver to cover the repair.

Was told that I had 2 options: call Apple corporate Customer Relations in Cupertino or let them escalate to Customer Relations now. I reiterated that this was a known issue acknowledged by Apple and Nvidia and i didn't think that I should have to pay for the known defect. I asked to be escalated to a supervisor which they did. Spoke to support person and they said they were sorry but couldn't help me. I told them "no, this is a known issue acknowledged by Apple and Nvidia and documented by Apple Genius today". I went to Apple Store Genius and was told I was outside the 4 year (3 AppleCare + 1 extended) repair program by 9 months. I just had mine go out this week (AugMBP). Be nice but firm and they will try to work with you. You need to jump through hoops to Customer Relations. TL DR - They are still replacing 2007 MBP boards if it will boot and run Apple diagnostics to show chip failed. Just booted up with a Ubuntu 12 cd, installed, updated and it seems like everything is supported (even the backlit keyboard - wha?!).Īnyway, thought I'd post it in case someone had a doorstop of a mac taking up space. Maybe it doesn't work the GPU as hard as OS X or something. What ended up solving it? Since she only uses the machine for email and web browsing, I thought I'd toss Ubuntu on it - voila! Haven't had a problem since. I downgraded to Snow Leopard again, then gradually upgraded to different point versions. It ended up always locking up the display after a while, but I could SSH in and trash the preferences and reboot. I updated to Lion to see if somehow it could be solved with software. It apparently passed (that's BS) and they said it was a software problem. Brought it to the apple store who did their nvidia test. My wife's machine started with a display flickering and had a bunch of display artifacts. So, I figured I'd post this in case anyone had a crapped out 2007 Macbook Pro with the stupid nvidia logic board problem and they can't use the machine anymore (since it's most likely out of the 4 year window that they give you).
